We are looking for an Operations Manager to join us in Braintree, Essex.
This role has senior management responsibility for the delivery and ongoing development of the Council’s frontline services to meet the needs of the District and deliver its statutory responsibilities, ensuring compliance with legislative requirements. The Operations service includes refuse, recycling and commercial waste, the waste transfer station, along with street cleansing, grounds maintenance, markets, street scene enforcement and the associated vehicle and plant provision.
Supporting the Head of Service, the post holder will provide a clear sense of leadership, direction and purpose across the service, ensuring our wide-ranging teams are engaged and motivated to maintain high standards and contribute to service developments.
Fundamental to the role is developing and leading on delivering service improvements, managing budgets and working with Trade Unions to maintain effective relationships. Alongside this it is critical to build effective relationships with Elected Members, Town and Parish Councils and partner organisations, to enable collaborative working,
To be successful in this role you will need to have substantial knowledge and experience of waste management, transport management and fleet maintenance, along with strong evidence of successful strategic leadership in a performance management culture.
You will also have knowledge of relevant legislation and experience of service planning and management in a comparable organisation.
You must be an excellent communicator, able to develop effective relationships and partnerships and be seen as a positive role model and effective influencer.

This is a dynamic and constantly changing area of work and an exciting opportunity has arisen for an Environmental Health Officer to join our Housing & Pollution team.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated team player to undertake the full range of duties working in a geographical area of the District. We would be willing to consider applications from final year Environmental Health students or those requiring practical experience.
The Housing & Pollution specialist will undertake our HMO licensing, inspect properties for HHSRS compliance and carry out appropriate enforcement, respond to complaints of nuisance, filthy and verminous premises, permitted processes and contaminated land, and serving notices as necessary.
The role will also respond to planning and licensing consultations and play an active role in delivering any public health initiatives that we are involved in.
The successful candidate will hold a degree or equivalent in Environmental Health or can demonstrate that you are actively working towards your qualification. Career grade candidates’ pay will be capped at scale point 29 (currently £37,675) until fully qualified.
If you are not an already qualified EHO, who is registered with the CIEH (formerly EHRB registration), to be eligible for consideration for this role you must be within the final year of your accredited degree qualification AND have completed and passed your “EHP portfolio”. We have an exciting opportunity for two Commercial Sales Assistants to join our Operations team.
Taking responsibility for a portfolio of existing and new commercial waste customers, you will support and advise them on their waste requirements, including recycling opportunities.
As a key player in improving customer experience and generating additional income, you will use a pro-active sales approach to meet targets and act as a main point of contact for customers, offering advice and assistance on a range of queries.
You will also liaise with the Waste Management team to ensure customer service standards are met, deal promptly with issues or queries, including the non-collection of waste, and provide administrative support to the Operations team.
To be successful in these roles, you should have good sales and negotiation skills, along with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, especially with telephone and face to face sales.
You will be confident and sales-led, with experience in working to expand a portfolio of commercial customers.
You will also be pro-active, keen to meet customers and have the ability to develop and maintain excellent customer relations.
Candidates should possess a full clean driving licence and have access to their own vehicle.
